Not sure about the performance, but doubt it will have much impact.

 

The main purpose of the skeg is to protect the propeller.  You can buy products which will repair broken, or protect a skeg from damage.  A skeg may help a bit with boat control, by helping the motor "track" and steer.  But most of that comes from the thrust of the motor.

I installed the one in Rhino's link on a 115 merc that had a broken skeg. Seems to steer much better at slow idle speed.
