It's Marshal Time!

Featured Replies

Well it's finally here. Elite #7 on the Delaware River is this week! I'll be a marshal! If I get paired with any of my heroes I'll go nuts. It's going to be an awesome experience watching these professionals do what they do best. Can't wait! Anyone ever been a marshal before? Any tips or anything?

Take notes and learn some new techniques! Have fun!

Good luck, what an awesome opportunity to learn from the best. It all depends on the personality of the pro. I have heard horror stories and I have heard of some great experiences. Good luck on the draw.

Thanks guys. Yea hopefully I get paired with someone who will talk but even if it's a guy who doesn't I'll just shut up and watch. Lol

BassAssassin,

See my post in thread "I'm gonna be a Marshal' by started by Megastink for some tips.

See you there!

It is a lot of fun. This will be my third time doing this.

Can't believe how lucky I got. Tim Horton today and Ish Monroe tomorrow. Not to mention meeting all the guys at the registration and weigh in.

That is very cool.

Looks like Mr Horton had a tough day with only 2 fish for 2-6, he's down in 82nd place.

Ish Monroe had a bit better luck with 3 bass for 5-13 good for 51st place.

Have fun.

Yea Tim struggled all day. He threw a tiny crankbait, popper and a Senko rigged with a small colorado blade in the bottom. He lost a few 2-2.5lb fish as well. In this tourney that would have been huge. He was great. Talked to me. I tried not to bother him too much. He seemed really focused so I just asked him questions here and there about what he was doing. He caught a 6lb in practice he said. The spot was only accessable at low tide. We got there and couldn't fit yet so he fished the area for about an hour until the water fell some more. He had me laying on the front deck to keep the nose down it was so tight. Probably a 50 yard tunnel. Came out covered in spiders. Lol. We were smacking each other all over trying to get them off. Lol. We got in there and another pro was already in there. Tim was ticked to say the least. But he sucked it up and fished on. He caught his first fish in there though. Then we ran back to some spots that had isolated structure in like 4-5 feet of water where he got his second. I know it's a cliche term but "consumate professional" comes to mind. He put his head down and fished, didn't let loosing fish or someone else in his spot get to him. And let me just say, this was my first experience in a bass boat. HOLY CRAP! Flying down the river at like 70mph was insane. I held on to those two handles for my life. Lol. We hit a little chop a few times and the boat would bob to the side, thought I was going to fly out of that thing. But I didnt. Lol.

Cool ~

I can already tell by the tone & texture of your response here that there is an above average chance you'll be signing up to do this again if & when the opportunity presents itself -

Thanks for sharing your day.

Yea if they ever come here again or anywhere close I am definitely signing up again. Ish was awesome. More talkative than Tim and he is hilarious. We talked about everything from fishing, to music. He let me stand right next to him while he flipped and pitched heavy cover and it was awesome to see a master of that technique that close.

What a cool experience! Thanks for sharing

BassAssassin,

You drew two good ones your first rodeo.

I was fortunate to Marshal for Tim at Falcon last year. He is a real pro and easy to talk to and definitely focused. He also fishes Pickwick a lot out of Muscle Shoals and we visited a lot about that fishery since the Road trip has been there so much.

I fished with Ish in the Southern Open a few years ago as a co-angler on the Harris Chain.

We didn't talk so much while fishing at first, but later I noticed he was calling around trying to find a place to store his boat and truck for 2 weeks while he flew back to California to tend to some business between tournaments.

I told him I had a house on the lake and he could store his rig in my driveway.

He and Palunuk(sp) were going to spend the night at the house but Ish found an earlier flight and Brandon came over and picked him up and dropped him off at the Orlando Airport on his way to Guntersville. We had a good visit and he is a class act also.

A couple years later I Marshaled for him at Falcon and we had a ball. (We ran into some weirdo that the Border Patrol had to chase off, but that's another story.)

You might check ---if your schedule permits --the AOY elite tournament is Sept 18-21 in Escabana Michigan. I signed up a couple weeks ago.

I enjoy both Marshaling as well as fishing the Bassmaster Opens. It is especially cool when I draw an Elite pro in the Open that I know from Marshaling. It is like I am not so much fishing with a stranger and they seem to treat me as a friend instead of the rank amateur I am! Plus the stuff I have learned is incredible.

I am glad you enjoyed your experience and hope you can do so again.
