New Rod/reel Advice Please!

Featured Replies

Hey everyone! New here. Name is Colton.

Currently I fish for large mouth bass.

I run a St. Croix triumph 6'6 MF spinning rod with an abu garcia orra s30 with 8lb black fire line.

I like this setup but it seems weak when pulling big 5+ pound fish in. I do not feel like it has enough back bone to get them pulled out of the weed cover quick enough. My drag is pretty heavy but the pole just bends, and they dive under cover then I have to go over and pull them out haha

Anyways, want to keep the full setup cost under say $250-300.

Have never used a casting setup, always spinning. So that is what I would like to stay with.

I fish solely senko style rubbers. Usually 6" watermelon redfleck.

So any suggestions?!

I didn't realize on the other thread that it was a medium/ fast. MhF is the obvious next step. 7' with braid would be my answer as well. ....

I would get a casting setup with 15 or 17 pound Trilene Big Game. You could get a couple of 7' Lightning Shock rods with Lew's reels at Wal Mart for $250-$300.

If you feel like you're underpowered for the fish and cover with the Med step up to a Medium Heavy / Fast, and spool it with 20# braid

Just be sure the rod's parameters stamped on the rod parallel those of your line test and bait weight.

You need the rod's power to cast and to get the bass out of the pads and grass so go with at least a medium heavy if not a heavy.

7:1 reel may also be something for you to consider in the future.

Good luck.

So my abu garcia bail arm broke. Have to order another one.

Ordered a pflueger supreme xt reel the other day supposed to arrive today cant wait to try that out!

And was on dicks sporting goods and found the abu garcia black max / vengance rod combo for $80. Dsports had a $10 off coupon, free shipping, and then there was a $20 mail in rebate.

So for picked up my first bait caster for around $55 with tax!

Its a 7' MH setup like you guys said, so I will see how I like it.

Gotta learn how to use a bait caster now!
