Trilene

Featured Replies

I have a 300yd spool of the 12# Super Strong XL Smooth Casting type.  I don't even know if its Mono, but I believe it is. Is it good enough to use with Square bills in the 4 FOW or less range, around timbers and what not. I'm gonna be using it on Fenwick Eagle 6'6" M/F with a Lews SS1S 5:4:1 reel. I'll be doing it from the bank.  Also should I treat it with some KVD Line and Lure.

I say give it a whirl... Then you will know, if you like it or not.

I don't see any harm..

No I am not, simply put... If you have the line now, I would try it! I mean it may be that it is a good line for you. I crank-bait with # 8 Yo... Is you're rig spinning? I am not familiar with that equipment list.. But for BC... It should work... Spinning? It's to large IMO , I have tried about every line made with a few exceptions, ultimately only you can say. Give it a whirl... See if you like it..

I figured I will put the mono on for the stretch, cause of my rods F action, and a Flouro leader for Abrasion resistance plus sinking ability.

I would have chosen the XT because of the abrasion resistance but if you aren't around rocks or weeds the line will be fine.

I like XL the best if using on spinning gear it is a little more limp and has a little less memory, for all round I consider the XT not as limp but better abrasion resistance, for all out abrasion resistance fishing rock's dock's and timber hands down Big Game, but it has the most memory and is a stiffer line, can be used on Baitcasting reels but I won't use or suggest it on spinning gear,,,,especially in cold temps. Berkley's Trilene line (no pun intended) makes some good product for most applications, but none of their lines are the best at everything. Try it and see what attributes you prefer the most, or do as I do, 832 Sufix on every reel for mainline, and use various mono's and Fluoro's to fine tune my presentations. But until you use it yourself you'll never really know for sure.

Stren is better than Berkley. Original Stren is in between XL and XT for both castability and abrasion resistance. It's a good compromise.

Rocks and Hard Timber fray it up pretty good,,, just check the line before tieing on anything heavy lol,,,  or you'll see ya lure fly out (wow) great cast hold on a sec lol...   it's great where theres nothing to chew it up..  i still use mono  over braid..

I used it this past Sunday at a resi on a dam with a rocky embankment. Tell you what it held up pretty good, and caught a 2 1/2 lbr with it. I just made sure to check for abrasions every few casts.

It was our line of choice for years, casts good and of course you check for nicks and abrasions as you would any line - you can afford to retie often with this line.
