question for Whittle

Featured Replies

Any tips you can give me on drilling holes for the hangers and belly waits? Mine are coming out alittle off center, even after finding center and using a press. Thank you in advance.

Bman, sounds like you have found the biggest problem with making crankbaits. What I do is lay out the pattern on the wood, then cut the blanks out on the bandsaw. Once the balnks are cut I sand the to the line on the disc sander, now you have a shaped block that is still flat. Using a marking gauge mark a center line all around the blank and your ready to drill and cut the lip slot. It is nearly impossible to get these critical features done on an already shaped bait. If you make a mistake with the finish the fish won't notice but if you can't make it run true you have wasted your time. With each bait you will get better.
