Looking for advice from Avid users for the best rod to throw shallow to medium-diving crankbaits, square bills, and lipless -- all 1/2 oz and less.  I have a 7 ft MHF Avid and love it for worms, jigs and spinnerbaits.  I don't care for "noodly" rods at all, and wondering if the MHM, MM or maybe even MF is a good choice for the cranks.  Basically, I'm looking for lighter backbone than the MH but wanting to avoid the "whippy" factor.

I have used my 7'MF Avid crank rod with a revo premier (12lbs gamma line) for Lipless cranks for the past few years and I haven't lost any fish with the fast action. I have not tried a MM action rod yet

I have a 6'6" medium fast casting rod that is brand new for sale in the flea market forum (shameless plug). Throw me an offer. A little bit shorter, but it should be fine. I have used medium power avids in the past for cranks and they work great.

The Avid 6'-6" MF is a pretty good rod for what you are describing. I like it for most all treble hook lures. I have the same rod in the Legend Elite and they are totally different. Give the Avid a look.

'Noodly' is your preference, but it's not optimal for crankbaits. Better load up for casting and better parabolic bend for fighting. Stick with a 7' moderate fast, for 1/2 and under weights, step up to the 7' medium heavy moderate if you want more power, and get a 7' medium fast if you want to rip through some grass a little better.

 

 

Personally I throw everything on the 7'MHM, squarebill, lipless, deep, shallow, wake, from a sk 1.0 to 6xd, etc

I throw up to about 10' divers on my custom 7' M/F avid with no problems at all.

I like my regular St. Croix Avid, 7', Medium , Fast Action rod just fine for the uses you mentioned.

The Avid MM would be a very hard rod to beat for your purpose, it's fabulous, and in my opinion, the best rod their is for that purpose!!

I think the avid MF has a softer tip than most of the MF rods I've used. I really like it. I don't find it whippy as it does fade into the backbone pretty fast, but soft enough you're not ripping anything out of lips without effort (I'm not much for power hook sets anyway. I'll go as far as to say I like the avid 7' MF better than the LTB 7'1" MF.

I think you may be happy with it. I had a 7' avid MHF for a short time and thought it was too stiff, and traded it for the 7' MF. Couldn't be happier.
