Lower James River

Featured Replies

I will be fishing a tournament on the lower James river at the end of October. I have never fished the James before. Any advice on where are some of the best places to fish for fall bass would be appreciated.

If you can get to the chicahominy, look for the mouths of creek's when the tide is falling, and look to the deep water piers in incoming....

Chippokes creek is good also.

Fish, it is the HISTORIC James River..

Great tidal river with the Chick about 40 miles downstream and the Appomattox about 10 miles on your right.

You fish tidal rivers. You know about tides and current. You can chase the falling tide.

Please go to the FL W web page and check out the article on the Rayovac Series on the Historic James River to read what the top pros are doing this weekend. You can read how they attacked the James and Chick rivers and what worked best.

Good luck.

And go by your favorite tackle shop and get the GMCO map of the Historic Tidal James River with the Chick river included. You will need it.

Thanks for the tip Sam. I fish the Potomac quite a bit so I am familiar with fishing the tides, But have also heard that the James can be a very tuff river to fish especially for late October. I'm gonna check out FLW for more info. Thanks to you too uncustered. I don't think I will be able to make it as far as the chick due to time constraints because we will be lauching from Osbourne Landing.

Welcome to the forums!

You can also look up Wilcox Bait and Tackle in Newport News. They're a well known, been around forever, bait shop, and official weigh station as well. They have a lot of know-how for the lower James.

Look for the "barge pond above the 295 bridge. Also the Appomattox river holds some nice fish...
