Straight Shank For Pit Boss

Featured Replies

Anyone use a straight shank hook and Snell knot for flipping a pit boss? If so, does it work well that way? I realize it is designed for a Texas rig, just wondering if anyone has tried it. I used the straight shank/Snell combo for most flipping, but not for the Boss. I am considering trying it out, though.

I do that with all my beaver style baits when flipping and it works fine, I believe it helps get better hooksets.

I use a 5/0 VMC heavy duty straight shank flipping hook on them all the time when I am punching. For regular t-rig work I go with a heavy duty vmc 4/0 ewg, both hooks work great with the pit boss.

Yep... Not just a pit though...I prefer straight shanks.. Over just about any other hook, doesn't mean I don't use other styles

This is a foreign concept to me.  Never seen, or heard of, flipping with a straight-shank hook before.   Only offset hooks of some kind.   Ive seen straight shank offsets used, but not like the ones mentioned here.

But is the hook point exposed or still skinned in the bait?  If exposed, isnt that counterproductive to fishing heavy cover?

Ohhhhhhhhh....Ok

smaller profile when using a straight hook.  i recommend also lookin at roboworm's hook they make, killer.   i don't like Trokar hooks because they make a big hole going in but the barb going out is kaput and many fish seem to come off trokars for me.

I thought the same way and I picked up some owner flippin hooks with the cps twist lock.  I'll never t rig when flippin beaver style baits again.  It has a lot more action, its actually more weedless and doesn't get hung up as much.

I also like the owner CPs hooks, but you have to be careful which one you get, as one is a light wire hook, and I accidentally used one of them and straightened out my hook on a really nice bass on the hookset. I also am not too fond of the trokar flipping hooks, the "surgical shap tip" has actually bent on me numerous occasions, when setting the hook hard on a bass.

Lately I have been using a mustad swim bait hook. It's a straight shank heavy duty weighted hook. I found them on sale pretty cheap, but I cut off the weight, and they make for a very nice hook.

Yea you have to get the flipping hooks, they are a thicker guage.  I'll have to look into the Mustads and I also am not a big fan of Trokar hooks...
