Hook Size?

Featured Replies

What size worm hook should i use?  I am fishing a 17lb flourocarbon line on a medium heavy fast action rod? I was using a 5/0 size when i first started, but now have been using a 3/0. Usually fish a lot of zoom brush hogs,  lizards,  rage crawls,  and frogs. Thanks

Size does matter.

In fishing, that is.

A 3/0 is a standard size for a Texas rigged plastic.

Some plastics need heavier and longer hooks, such as your toads and large worms.

I want you to try something new.  When you rig your Texas plastic try to have the point of the barb facing directly up to the bait's skin.  Not laying on top of it and then into the skin; but in the worm with the barb facing straight up with the barb tip right under the skin.

May give you a better hook set.

Just something to consider.

I have 5/0 round bend worm hooks, but I can't remember when I last used them.

Normally I'll use a 2/0 - 4/0 for TX rigging.

But I've also gone down to a 1/0 for finesse. I've caught some nice bass on smaller hooks.

Soft plastics a general rule is the gap should be 3X the body diameter where the gap located in the plastic.

Lot of variables however; pockets in the soft plastic to allow the hook to penetrate easier like a Fluke, skin hook the side of the plastic in lieu of through the center, nose hooking like drop shot and wacky rigging allow using smaller gap and lighter wire hooks.
