Micro Guide Noise Problems

Featured Replies

Okay, to start off I have been searching the web and forums and read all the threads on micro guides making noise and tried everything and no luck. I just bought the new Powell Timax 734 and love it, but on my 1st full day on the water with it I noticed a scraping noise only when the rod is between 8 and 12 oclock, like the line is damaged. The first 6 feet especially makes this noise when reeling in a cast, it doesn't get nicks but when you reel it through you can hear that it's not smooth anymore. This happened with yo zuri hybrid, big game, and invizx. I cleaned all guides with a q tip, checked for cracks, the very tip feels as if it has an edge to it. Is it possible that my tip is just a factory defect?

I don't know if its a defect or not but I have a halo daylight that does the same thing. I thought it was my reel at first &when it wouldn't make the noise on my other rod(it has regular guides) i figured it was the guides.I believe it has to do with how small the tip guide is along with minor defects&abrasions in the line.

The line does start to get damaged and gets those little curls in fluoro if I don't retire frequently. I even went to academy tonight and bought a brand new spool of 15lb invisx and after about 20 casts noticed the line getting damaged. Im going to call Powell tomorrow

I just hate thinking about putting a new tip on a brand new rod. I checked out a few other brands of micro guide rods at academy and 4 of the 6 I looked at felt like a smooth transition around the bottom of the insert to the frame. This is my first micro guide rod, but I own 9 other Powell's and have had no problems whatsoever in 4 years

You simply have a guide issue. The fact that they are "micros" is beside the point. Whether the tip top is defective or just designed that way can't be determined without seeing it.
