Anchors - The Good & Bad

Featured Replies

Now that the fall winds are blowing up here in the NE, I'm in search of a new anchor for an 17-6" a glass boat. Anyone got any recommendations for a good anchor? The kind I'm thinking about is the folding galvanized types. Any info on the good or bad would be appreciated.

I bring two types, depending on the bottom structure. One is just plain ol heavy, good for a hard bottom.

The other is a mechanical "dig in" type. Good for soft bottoms. use a chain to the anchor, and lots of lead on your rope.

Danforth anchor with chain & plenty of rope.

The wind was honking for the last two days here in upstate NY!

I carry two anchors in my 17' boat: a 15 lb. mushroom anchor and a 9 lb. fluke anchor.   Adding as many feet of 1/4" chain as you're willing to deal with really helps them grab quickly and hold.  The common recommendation is 150' of 3/8" line for your anchor rode.

Tight lines,

Bob
