Crankbait Lips

Featured Replies

i am just starting out making my own crankbaits and i have a quick question. Does any one make there own lips? If so i would love to know how. I have five cranks in despirate need.

I make my own lips from Lexan and micarta. What material are you going to use?

Usually when I am making lips they are cut and stacked 8-10 at a time and the lexan is cut to pattern on the bandsaw then sanded to the final shape on the disc sander. With micarta I cut it into pieces close to the finished size with metal shears, then stack and finish to final shape on the disc sander. Micarta will eat saw blades and wear a mask when sanding this stuff. If you are only making a few baits it will be easier and a lot less trouble to buy the lips.from Janns or Stamina.

i was planning on lexan. I know it might be easier but, call me ocd, i want my baits to be 100% hand made.

I use polycarbonate and g-11, cut both with a pair of textile shears (don't like the saw for this), just find a pattern you like and draw it on a piece of cardboard and you are in business.   Narrow bills tend make a tighter wiggle, wide bill make a wobble (most of the time).  Line tie in lip, don't insert past the midway point between the nose of the bait and end of the bill.
