Just Priced A Starter For My Merc.unbelievable

Featured Replies

The starter for my 1980 Merc.,died on Sunday. The cost for a new one is $300.00.I mostly fish ponds and lakes, where no wake is allowed. So my trolling motor is used all day.I'm not sure if I wanna spend $300.00,but it be nice to have the big engine running,in case the trolling motor breaks down.I just think that $300.,is unbelievable.

that is crazy. Did you check the brushes? I'd try an automotive place to see if they can repair it before spending that much

What model Merc is it? $300 is more than any I have ever bought. I would repair the one on it at that price.

Google the starter part number..........I did and found my starter for $74.00........good luck.

The starter should run you in the neighborhood of $125.00,but then you need to add labor

That makes sense. What is labor, about $90 an hour?

I went to my local Merc Dealer. He found me one for $100.00.THE guy down the street, will probaly charge me $40.It's not a big job.

A starter is not a big job at all. And as long as you or a buddy can do the work there is no since in ever paying retail for parts when you can just shop online. Most marine mechanics charge $75-90 an hour with a 1 hour minimum also.

You can install it yourself. It isn't that difficult!
