chatter baits

Featured Replies

love the results but hate the thought of losing 6 bucks on deep snags. Does anyone make their own and if so would you mind passing along a little do it yourself instructions.  Thanks

chatterbaits are pretty easy to make. i just used a 1/4oz. jig head. put 2 split rings on it so the blade will be verticle when swimming. next, i cut out the blade on stainless steel(not sure how thick). used a drill press to put 3 small holes in it. connected the blade to the split ring. and added one of those clip things and finish. here is what i cam up with. if i didnt make it clear, just say something and ill tell you.

I make my own here is a pic e6b2_1.JPG

I pour them using a Gamakatsu hook, in aDo-Its Arkey flat eye jig Mold from Barlow's Tackle.

Use the metal blank that is comes with and cut it off so that it even with the head cavity. When you pour the head the lead will just fill the cavity and leave it smooth on top. paint it the color of your choice with powdercoat paint add the blade with a split ring and snap. add a skirt and there you have it. I would use a good split ring since this is all that holds the fish to your line. I use 30 lb test. to keep it running and not rolling bend the tip of the blade back a little. I use galvanized steel and I had a friend build be a punch to make the blades. Barlow and Janscraft sell the stainless steel ones that should be just fine. Barlows also seel Ric Clunn spinner bait trailers that work GREAT!!!!!! If you want to save all that trouble I sell them for 4.00 each shipped to your door.

New to this forum and have enjoyed ready through the posts here. I have some blades if you want to give them a try. I also hate loosing any tackle in the $5 plus range so I understand the need to make your own. Email me an I will send a you some free samples.

Hey Fedxpress I couldnt help notice your skirt color is that a homemade job or did you buy that somewhere...

I use to buy it then the discontinue it. I hopefully will have the rubber to make them within a day or so. Seems to be the only problem with some retailer lately you order 100 of something and go pack to get more and they are out off them.

Thats a great color I couldnt help but think of using that on my Jigs up here in NH. Well if you get a chance could you give me the recipe/colors for making that. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanx

I sent the skirt back to let them match up the colors when I find out I will pass it on.

I bought one of these a couple days ago from bps.  havent tried it yet, but will give it a shot today.  Do you fish these just like any other jig?

You fish them either YOYOing them, ripping them, stroking them like a reg. jig. Or you can slow roll or burn them like a spinnerbait. A lot of time the only way you know you have a fish is because you lose the feel of the blade thumping, or weight on the line. If you ever stop feeling the blade thumping set the hook. Some times grass will make it feel this way but here again, setting the hook, will rip the lure out of the grass and a lot of time trigger a strike if it wasn't a fish. Its a fun lure to play with and you can change the profile in so many ways with different trailers and plasics.

thanks for the info man.  like the old saying is dosent cost anything to set the hook lol.
