I noticed today that when casting a zara Spook or big rattletrap that the the centrifugal brakes would snap open when I loaded up a big cast while laying off a stump row.

 

I usually only set two opposing brakes on and 2 off. After a few casts my distance would fall off and when I checked the centrifugal brakes, one or both of the brakes that were "off" would have snapped into the on position. This happen on 2 reels and maybe a 3rd. These reels are not old, they only been used one season.

 

Has anybody else run into this?

I have a Tournament Pro Speed Spool I bought early this summer.  It's been functioning perfectly and I really like it.  I also keep two brakes on, and have not had the other brakes self-engage.

 

Maybe they got some lube/oil on them and they slip on too easily?  I think I would try giving them a blast of brake cleaner or degreaser to see it that might help...

This is a big issue with Abu Garcia Revo S reels and the STX. Can't say I've heard of the Lew's reels having this issues, but I think your reel has the same style of brakes.

That is what Chinese made reels do.  The reason ABU's do the same thing is that they are the same thing with a different sticker.  Same as Bass Pro reels too.  Take it back and get yourself a Shimano Curado.  One day Chinese engineering might equal Japanese engineering, but it will be a while.

My Lew's say Made in Korea. The Curado G and current I are made in Malaysia, not Japan.

Please let's not turn this into a company vs company debate. It's tired and old.

I have heard of these issues before with dual braking reels of several brands. My suggestion would be to call lew's.. Evey time I have used their customer service they were quick and efficient and pleasant.
