How to Powder Coat used reels

Featured Replies

I hope this is the right section

I have some great Abu Garcia - Ambassadeur reels that I have restored and was wondering if anyone knew how to paint the reels. I could take them apart all the away to a skeleton, but did not know if someone could powder coat them or if I could use the powder paint that you use for jigs. I do not know how to prep them for the paint..................... Help.!!!

It would be cool, maybe a little costly, but great to have some new paint on them.

Try contacting a local motorcycle shop they may know someone that can do custom powder coating.  An automotive shop may know as well.  The powder coat for lure will probably be to thick for the reels.  You will have to be certain to plug all the screw holes and such so they don't fill with powder coat.  If the holes fill you will need a tap and die kit to rethread the holes  this will be a mager pain in the butt.  You may want to contact the manufature and see if they will refinish them for you.

Good luck,

I appreciate your help, I will do just that and find a local shop that has powder coating. I never thought about the fact that you needed to cover the threads, thanks for that as well. I will let you know what happens and post pics when they get done. That is if they ever do.

Mike,

Another option you may want to consider is a gun blueing kit.  Not real sure how they work but I believe it is a type of metal dye.  May want to call the local gun shop.

Thanks Tom, I have disassembled the reels and going to take them to a powder coater that I have found near here. If it is to expensive I will be trying the gun blueing kit soon. I thank you again
