I went nigh-fishing last night, threw a white cavitron. I had a few wakes following my buzzbait, but nothing ever hit it. The last two time I decided to just stop my lure when it was almost at the following wake, nothing still. What gives? 

Might be musky, pike, or pickerel.

Are any of those in the place you were fishing at?

Nope, it's a golf course pond. Thought maybe catfish, but I've never caught a cat in the 4 years i've been fishing it. 

If I'm getting good follows but not strikes, I consider myself close but not on.  So I would make a few little changes not a drastic one.  Adding a twitch or any significant cadence change would have been my first try - anything to make it seem like it was trying to "escape".  At night, I would have jumped to black, then changed sizes if that didn't get them to hook up. 

 

I also keep a worm ready if I'm fishing topwater and either me or my partner will throw it in at a fish who just missed a top water hit.  May could have tried that, pull em up with the buzz and get lucky on the worm.  Haven't personally tried it on waking fish, but it does work on fish that miss spooks, poppers, etc.  They don't call it "bait and switch" for nothing, lol.

Maybe there looking for something a little slower...Try a Popper or Jitterbug. also try in a black if have it in that color

So they're interested, but note quite enticed. Try a different color (chartruese, black, whatever). If that doesn't work, try something that moves a little slower on top, like a popper. 

Try a black buzz and alter retrieves like stated earlier. If that doesn't work, order some bladed jigs from Bluebasser86. That Big Head Wobbler will get them to eat I promise!

you might also try twitching a fluke in that same area.... little slower retrieve might get them to commit...

This is not uncommon, when this has happened to me, I follow up with a spinner bait rolling it just under the surface almost like a wake bait.   If they're gonna eat, they'll typcially eat that!

When I have followers or lookers, I usually change colors and that gets them.  If it's following, its interested but not sure if it's food or not.  Sometimes just a change in speed, a stop, a speed up, can trigger a strike, but you said that wasn't working.  I would try that before a color change but, usually after that its a color change and that gets them.  If that doesn't work, that's when I put whatever I am fishing down and try something different and start all over again hahahahaha.

Wrong skirt color?

Too deep?

Totally on top of the water?

Running correctly?

Using line they can see?

Blade too big?

Blade too small?

Wrong color blade?

Water surface too calm?

Water surface too choppy?

Not enough surface bubbles?

Too many surface bubbles?

Trailer hook too long?

Trailer hook wrong color?

Trailer wrong color?

Trailer too big?

Trailer too small?

 

Otherwise, the bass may not have been hungry but being an inquisitive animal he wanted to get a better look at the buzzbait.

Listen to the fish. The only problem is, fish don't speak English; so there's usually some trial and error to be involved!
