Hi bassresource. I am a collegiate angler at Tennessee Tech University. After a year of fishing out of the back of a boat, I decided to buy my own. Ended up paying $2750 for a 1989 Stratos 275 Pro. Boat is is great mechanical shape after getting a few pumps replaced.

 

Now I want to fix the clear coat. It's not the best but not awful. I was wondering how to do this and how much it would cost to do it myself compared the cost at marine shop. Also, I was thinking about getting a wrap for my schools colors and logos. How much would that be?

There are some options for doing this yourself, but it will by no means look brand new.

 

The wrap idea may be a better solution if you are looking to have a "brand new" look to the boat.

Depending on how bad the clear coat is, you can wet sand it and then follow that up with rubbing compound and then polishing compound and finally a few layers of wax. I'll bring it back to close to new looking as long as it's not too far gone. Total cost of that project is about $30-50 and an investment of your time. Otherwise a fiberglass place can do the same with a much higher price. I'm not 100% sure on the price of a wrap anymore since I looked into it a while ago, but I believe it was somewhere in the range of $3K. If you do get a wrap though, you may be able to offset the cost with sponsorships. 

As mentioned, if wrapped, no need to do gal coat, and yes, you can expect to spend $3,000-$3,500 on a wrap. If clear gel is down to the color, be careful. Any sanding si going to take the color off the metal flake and that turns it silver. If it has a rough feel to it, the clear is most like gone. You can keep it polished and looking better, but will never look shiny and new.

I have found something similar to my old boat before I sold it. The best place I have found information is on 2 different web sites, {www.themarinedoctor.com } - { www.tinboats.com }. www.tinboats.net could be also. I had a fiberglass boat and noticed small holes on the keel. So I raised my boat 1 point at a time to have the whole boat lifted and place on floor jacks with wood blocks to support the boat. Well it worked and done the entire boat even the places the floor jacks was. But I have found that all the information out there was from those 2 websites. I hope this inforation helps you!
