Epoxy Ramp

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I jus finished wrapping a spinning rod with no foregrip.  I want to make an epoxy ramp from the reel seat to the blank.  How do I accomplish this.

Thanks again for any info.

page 2 of that thread has ramp info.  A tip to remember when rampining is to elevate 1 side of your dryer so the rod is NOT level... keep the tip end high and that will help the epoxy (whether it's adhesive or finish) from leveling itself out down the blank.  It doesn't need to be real high, I just used a few books on that end...maybe 15-20 degrees of angle was all.

Any gel epoxy will be easier to work with for a ramp since it will stay put better and build higher.

Good luck!

Post pics when you are done...

A thread like this was on rodbuilding.org this morning, and here was a reply from Emory Harry a long time builder that I have been following. It is the same process that I have been using..

I find that it is easier and faster to just use a brush with Flex Coat on it and while the rod is turning position the brush so that I get an area about 2/3 of the way up the winding check that is wetted with Flex Coat. Then I simply drop several extra drops of Flex Coat off of the brush next to the winding check and it will wick up the wetted area and form a very nice looking ramp. This approach is quicker and not as messy as using other epoxies to form a ramp and I do not worry about the yellowing. Plus I do not build up the ramp with thread, it is not necessary. The color of the ramp will appear to be the color of the thread underneath it. I usually use a contrasting color to the wrap colors under the ramp, often black, but only one layer of thread.
