Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth

Featured Replies

Ha, I just got an order in for a few rods and found that I had mistakenly ordered the 6'9" MH casting rod versus the 6'9" MH spinning rod that I had really wanted.  Hmmmmm, what to do, what to do.  Rather than monkey around and pay shipping on the return, I'm leaning towards keeping it.  I tend to be more of a spinning guy to begin with but in fairness, I had said that I wanted to upgrade my casting gear and try to get more comfortable using it this season.  At this length, with a medium heavy power and fast action, what techniques am I mostly looking at would you suppose?  I'm guessing jigs, worms, maybe spinnerbaits, stuff like that?

For what it's worth, I also got a 6'9" HMG M-F casting rod in this order as well.  I tend to fish very clear water that's mostly free from heavy cover (some grass in places but typically not heavy matted stuff) and I thought that this would cover most of my jig/worm/single hook needs.  I have to decide whether to keep the ET Smallmouth rod or possibly send it back or trade it to someone for something I can use more.  Thoughts?

It has the sensitivity for jigs and worms but that is one beautiful spinnerbait rod!! Spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits and swim jigs but you can use it for just about anything with a single hook, I love the length for spinnerbaits personally.

Thanks for your thoughts smalljaw, I was really hoping for some first hand comments from those who had used it.  Much appreciated.

I have that rod, and it's my fluke and senko rod. I have also tossed swimjigs, finesse flipping jigs, and t-rigged plastics with it. It's not over or under rated in power/action...IMHO it's just about what I consider as the model for a mh/f rod.

OK, thanks.  I'm actually thrilled to get first-hand accounts, particularly from guys in my area that are likely fishing the same areas and techniques.  Much appreciated.

Perfect spinnerbait rod. I have a 6'10" MH/F Lew's rod for my spinnerbait rod, and a 6'9" would be perfect. On top of spinnerbaits, I throw a chatter bait (bladed swim jig), scrounger jig, and close cover swim jigs with it. But if you fish a lot of deep, non-covered water I'm not so sure. For deeper, less covered water I like a 7'2" MH/F for my spinnerbaits and swim jigs so I can get them out farther. Try it out, see what you like. Rods and reels are tools, and some of the best advice I've heard is that there is no set standard for what to use or how to use something in fishing. Use what works for you.
