What Is The Main Forage In Socal Lakes?

Featured Replies

Like the title says, does anyone know what the main forage for bass in lakes like Diamond Valley Lake, Lake Hodges or other San Diego Lakes that are in the north county. I just recently was reintroduced to bass fishing this summer and fished lake hodges a lot towards the end of summer and noticed a lot of baitfish all over the shore but could not tell what kind of baitfish it was. Same goes for Diamond Valley lake for me. How do you guys tell what kind of baitfish are running around, and other forage that the bass might be keying in on? And does anyone know what the main forage would be like for these lakes in SoCal? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

There's a lot of silversides where I fish. A major food source for bass in SoCal is crawfish, trout, and panfish. That's about all I know.

threadfin shad in most so cal lakes but for diamond valley here are smelt (Silks says three species) and there are shrimp, sculpin, crayfish, small bluegill and other young of the year

All our lakes have good populations of Threadfin shad as the primary forage fish.
