I am a co-angler and I am trying to set up my rod and reels so I can be a little more versatile for next season of tournament fishing. Keep in mind I am not interested in buying anymore rods at the moment so I have to work with what I have ,which for western NY  I believe I have enough  rod and reel combos(for now) to successfully tournament fish . What I was thinking of trying is putting 50 lb. braid on a 7:1:1 Lew's Tournament Speed Spool Casting Reel and a 7ft. MH St. Croix Mojo Bass Casting Rods. This rod has been tested to be like other brands heavy action rods. I would like to use this setup for multiple applications and apply different fluorocarbon leaders for the different applications or use the braid when needed for a frog rod. Also   If I were to attach a 17lb flouro leader to the 50lb braid to cast around docks with a jig or Texas rig is this a good idea?  i want to be able with this rod to fish heavy cover or lily pads with a frog and then just add diffrent leader size like 12 -20 lb floro for spinnerbait or texas rig or jig etc. for the most part this rod would be use for things other then heavy cover but braid lasts for a couple  years so it would be more cost effective and time effective for me to put 65 lb or 50lb braid and puton or take off a floro leader when needed.

I would think your in the ball park, 15 to 20 f.c. - 6'. If theirs a lot of rocks and rough poles I'd go with a mono instead of f.c. Mono can take more and with a 6' leader you won't notice the diff.

For flipping 65 is okay. But, if you're not fishing too heavy cover, then I would stick with 50. 

I've caught plenty of bass on 30 braid with a 15 mono leader, also just 30 braid for frogs in open water areas. 50 lb. should be fine for short casts (25 to 35 ft.) If you find 50 is to much, try 40 or 30 for longer casts. Your talking docks so your cast should be more a flip or pitch instead of a cast.

you also said your preparing for a no-boater seat. 4 rods should be enough, 5 is ideal, 6 to much - they get in the way. Most boaters will let you use one of their rods if you fine a need for it. Reminder, most draw tourney's are a shared weight type, and all team tourney;s are. I've fished a lot of pro-ams on both sides of the boat and the keep you own fish idea has been gone for a while (mid 80's) combined weight is more common so you shouldn't have a problem borrowing a rod to help out the bag size.

Buy a 2nd spool, that way you can set up for different techniques much easier 50 lb braid on one for frogs and jigs and then a good copoly or fluro for reaction baits on the other.

just use an alberto knot and tie on a 10 to 12 foot leader of flurocarbon at the end.
