Plastic Lure Design

Featured Replies

I am kinda stuck in a rut here. I need an aluminum 2 piece mold made. The problem is, I only have a few pictures of the object I need replicated. I am not getting much feedback from some of the vendors I have contacted. Lurecraft would do it, but I need a 2 piece for pouring. What exactly do I need to do when I have pictures only and an idea in my head to get this thing rolling. I know it may be pricey, but the customer service from some of these places leaves much to be desired.

I know what you mean.  I had an idea for a bait last winter.  I finally went to a machine shop.  They said they could make it for me with up to 100 cavities.  The cost would have been around $400 so I passed.

If you can get a 100 cavity mold for $400, you shoulda jumped on it ;)

Speak to Shawn Collins at shawncollinscustoms.com, he's got a 3D scanner if you have a sample, and can draw it up for you if not. It's gonna be expensive, even more so if you have him draw it. He specializes in lead molds, but will do plastic, even though they are more time consuming.

What are you considering expensive?

In the $200+ range for something like a 6" worm in 5-6 cavity, where the stock molds at Bob's or Del's are 1/2 that or so, and Lurecraft's design/built at one time was $80, not sure what it is now.

It mainly depends on the complexity of the bait, too, as I've gotten molds from him that were more, and some that were less

Since you are asking about a 2 piece mold I assume you are going to inject the plastic and if that is the case a silicone or rubber mold may be more suitable, surely less expensive alternative. Complex shapes can be done such as realistic swimbaits bodies. Enclosed is a picture of a 5" Fluke pattern I carved and from which the gentleman made a silicone mold to reproduce the bait. With A silicone mold you are able to get very complex detail if you want, on the Fluke we kept it simple.

Not sure if you can inject a silicone mold, as it would be tough to keep it sealed while injecting vs. simply pouring. Then again, BW might be talking about a hard platic bait, didn't think to ask about that!

You are right DP, it would help if we knew exactly what he was making.

Sorry, it will be a soft plastic with much detail.

Aluminum it is then ;)

Keep in mind that the smaller the parts, the harder they are to handpour, and you would need to consider an injection machine to pour them, or maybe the injector that Jann's sells fitted somehow to your mold. I've never used that injector, but have read quite a few warnings on TU concerning those things breaking and spilling hot plastic, but know a local guy that uses them with no problems, could be operator error? Good luck!
