Spinnerbait Makers

Featured Replies

I am looking into making my own spinnerbaits over the winter.  For the people who do this, do you actually save any money by doing this?  I am specifically looking for a head prepainted with an Owner UltraPoint Hook or equal.  The best pricing I found was basically 1.32/head if I don't buy in large bulk.

Add this to the swivels, blades, ect I am thinking it might be right around the same price as a booyah or something similiar.

Build baits for fun, to get stuff you can't get at the store, heck, build out of boredom, but not to save money, it's not gonna happen!

The large manufacturers sell a bait for say, $5, where the sum of it's parts, if you were to build a bait with quality stuff, would be close to that. The difference is they build in very large quantities, and use foreign labor, where the home builder builds with love and small quantitis.

The big advantage of doing them yourself is they will be exactly like you want them. To save money you will have to buy in bulk and large quanities and forget about your time involved. Then to top it off when you have created a spinnerbait work of art that is perfect in every way, color, weight, balance, flash and action, someone will always say "gosh I could have bought one just like that at Walmart for a dollar.

After which you will be cuffed and carried away.

I have a lake record on my own spinnerbait .That makes me extra proud.

Don't make ur own spinnerbaits if u want 2 save money, it doesn't worth it.

Gotcha, I found out buying jig heads and skirts seperate saves me a little money per jig.  I was hoping to do the same thing while being able to make something exactly how I want it.  Who knows, I might spend the time and money to make my own anyways.  I am sure I will be bored during the winter.

Thanks for the replies, Jason

My best five fish limit came on one of my own spinnerbaits.  I would have spent who knows how much time and money trying to locate the exact bait I wanted.  Instead, I made it.  Then I caught  fish with it..... enough quality fish to turn around and make five more just like it.  Today, I do not carry a single pre-made spinnerbait in my tackle bag.

On a side note.... I noticed your sig says St. Louis.  If you are worried about being 'bored' over the winter, buy an Illinois license and fish one of the four power plant lakes within 2.5 hours of you.  Dress warm. ;)

The first 8 pound bass I caught was on a homemade spinnerbait.  I made the form out of wood and used piano wire and trot line hooks.  This was a few years ago.  I am an addicted tinkerer.  My wife can't believe she married someone who plays with rubber worms every night!!!  Keeps me out of bars.

I agree with the others.  Build the baits for fun, not to save money.
