Blank Questions

Featured Replies

I am looking to build a frog rod and need help picking a blank.  All of the low end blanks from the name manufacturers are too high relative to what a completed rod can be bought for.

I would like to get a Heavy 7' Fast action blank for about $40-$50.

What do yall think of the Mudhole Custom builder blanks? Specifically-IS701H 7' 15-25 1 1/2 - 3 Fast Hvy .6 7.5 $22.95

What other blanks are suggested in this price range?

Thanks

Anthony

The best value blanks by far are the Rainshadow blanks by Batson.

For what you are looking for the RX7 IMB844 or RX6 MB844 would be perfect.  MSRP is $55.57 for RX7 and $44.71 for RX6.

I have an IFS904 7'6 that I use for carolina rigging and it is an excellent blank.

Hard to argue with that.  The Batson blanks I have used have been absolute price performers!

I think there are still some heavy blanks left in the Shikari sale on mud hole... some of them are in the sub $30 range.

If you need to squeak shipping into that budget you are very limited.  I might also look at the cabela's blanks.... the lighter musky blanks may spec out well for a frog rod, if the bass blanks are too light.

Good sales don't come around that often...  when you find one, you need to stock up!  ...lol

I haven't used them yet.... I also wondered and was going to buy 1 or 2 with my next order just to see if they are worth having.

Like Keith said, check out the Shikari blanks on sale at MudHole. There are a couple that might meet your needs. Most have sold out. I bought 3 a couple of weeks ago. Beware though, you will not receive Shikari decals to put on the rod. I was a little disappointed about that.

For a few bucks ($3-$5) and a fax copy of the invoice, Decal Connection will make you some Shikari decals.   ;)

Thanks for the help.  I think I will get the MB844.  Is Fishsticks4U.com a good place to order from?

Thanks

No they won't...

From the Decal Connection Website...

Decal Connection has recently been asked by a few major rod blank companies to not make any decal with their name on them unless we obtain the following from you.

A copy of the original decal, warranty card, or proof of purchase that came with the blank.   You can either send this to us by mail, file attachment, or faxed,

We know that all of you are legitimate rod builders and would never try to sell a rod with information on it that was not true.

The sad fact is there are many out there that do attempt this illegal practice.

To save time on an order like this, please send us the info that we need as requested by these companies.

We will be attempting over the next thirty days, to contact all other major rod companies and address this type of procedure with them.

Thank you for your understanding of this new and needed procedure.

It not only protects you, Decal Connection, but also the rod companies.

Since Shikäri is no longer in business they cannot contact them for permissions...

ReelMech,

I never asked Deb specifically about Shikari but she told me she could make anything but Calstar and that my reciept for the blank was sufficient evidence. Maybe things have changed in the past few weeks.

I do the same thing each time... email my order and follow it with a fax copy of the blank invoice... she's made everything I have asked for so far. Worst case, I bet ATC owns the rights and could give permission.

It's worth a quick call or email to verify...

flechero,

That's just it. I contacted DC a couple of days ago, to order some ratings decals for a couple of Shikäri SJ702 blanks I got just after the sale to ATC. I could have them made up. But could not have copies of the original Shikäri blank decals (I have 2) done because of the sale.

I also have had Karen @ Bingham contact her good friend over at Shikäri about the decals for the blanks that are still being sold, and the word I got was there are none left (decals or original blanks from the sale). So watch out for blems and or seconds being sold as original blanks. There is a way to tell if they are seconds or blems...
