Dilemma

Featured Replies

Now that I am hooked on this sport of bass fishing, I am on the hunt for purchasing a used fiberglass bass boat.  I have a 20' Starcraft Starfire v-hull that is big and bulky, quite heavy, and not the most user friendly boat to bass fish out of.  In my search, there are no fiberglass boats for sale in my area and I rarely see one on the waters that I fish.  When I asked a local bass fisherman who has an aluminum bass boat the reason why, he states that the lakes are not conducive for fiberglass because they are way to rocky and I would be a fool to purchase one.  I understand that rocks are not fiberglasses best friend but should this be the only reason other than the locals laughing me off the lake to shy away from purchasing one?

It goes without saying that running around a lake bouncing off rocks isn't healthy for any hull, regardless of the material it's made of - (I said it anyway . . . .)

It's important to choose the right boat for your particular fishing situation - whatever that may be.

So just because a lake contains some hazards to navigation - once familiar with the water, a boater should be able to avoid them, especially with today's electronics.

Perhaps you could contact a couple of local bass clubs in your area and see what a few of those humans have to say about it.

You have to realize also, glass boats cost more and are generally more expensive to operate. You can usually get into nice,17 foot tin can a lot cheaper than a similar size glass boat. It weighs a lot less, and can use a smaller motor that burns less gas.

A lot of people have gone to them just for those reasons, even though, deep down, if it wasn't for todays economy, they really would like to have a glass boat because there are a lot of positives of a glass over the can. To keep them from sounding like they are just being "cheap" or making do, they use all kinds of excuses. So, if you are just being practical, the can might be the better choice. If you want the comfort and more speed, the glass is the way to go.
