My friend took a 7 point and gave me the tail...

Featured Replies

Yeeeaaah...  I don't know if this is the right place to post but it's a start.

My friend took a 7 point white tail last weekend and gave me the tail to make jigs out of.

This is the whole tail, bone and all.  I put it in a ziplock and threw it in the freezer until I can figure out what to do.

So what do I do to make the tail sanitary and the hair usable?

Thanks

Cory N

All you have to do is cut the tail up the bone carefully with a sharp knife or razor blade.  remove the bone then take the tail and salt all the skin. Leave it to dry for a few days and shake the salt off.  Now it will be preserved and wont rot.

Salt works great but it takes to long to dry. Go to Walmart and get a box of borax. It's in the cleaning section. Take the bone out like Senko said, then mix equal parts salt and borax and rub on the flesh. Put the tail in the ziploc and then fill it half way with mixture and shake it up. It should be dry and preserved within a week or two.

Borax is the way to go.  I used to do this all the time when I tied flies.
