Which hook for big jigs?

Featured Replies

I have a friend who is going to make some football jigs for deepwater early this season and during summer. These will be 3/4 oz. I have to order my own hooks and he didn't really tell me much on what to do and says he never really makes them that heavy. I want to use a flat eye hook. I'm thinking between Gammy 5941 and the Mustad 32976 or 32978. These jigs will be dragged around different types of bottoms from smooth, to rocky, to over and through brush piles. Which hook should I decide on and what size?

Thanks

I don't use larger than 4/0 on my football heads.

I am not familiar with the hook numbers you posted.  My advice would be to make sure that these hooks will fit into his mold if he is pouring the heads.  The wire size and bend has to be compatible.

Thanks. The Gammy and the smaller numbered Mustad are regular wire round-bend hooks while the higher Mustad is a heavy wire round bend.
