Pro Qualifier Brakes

Featured Replies

Since there has been a million purchased in the last week i thought i would start a thread on setting the brakes.  How many engaged ect.  I wondered how many brakes people use for half ounce squarbills.  I have backlashed using what it came with

Brake settings will vary widely between users and setups. I'd start with 3 cent brakes activated, set the spool tension for a slow controlled fall then set mags according to wind conditions. I fish some PQ reels on a similar technique and find them pretty user friendly.

There are a few reasons a backlash can occur quite frankly, however, how many brakes do you have set? What rod are you using? What line type? Finally, is baitcasting new for you?

I only ask due to the possible chance there may be other issues involved...

Lew's are built the same. I absolutely fell in love with mine. It beats the old Ambassadeur 6500CDL and 5601 Classic C4.

It has three set from factory.  I put 14 pound mono on it.  will put fluor on it when i get it firgured out.  I have a decent amount of experience with baitcasters. I can cast my lews tournament mgs with no problem.  I thought i would try one of these but its the first one i have owned with brakes like this.  I was casting it on a winch

The PQ uses a common centrifugal braking system that other Doyo reels use such as the Pure Fishing stuff and other brands but for whatever reason my PQ needed 4 brakes on to match the braking of other Doyos I've owned with only 2 brakes engaged.  Maybe mine is a special snowflake but I wouldn't be surprised if as many as 4 braked needed to be engaged to get into the '2 pin sweet spot' setting.    .

thanks everyone.  I put 4 brakes on it and headed to a psrking lot and got it working really well actually.  I couldnt find an open bit of water anywhere thats why i went to a parking lot with a half ounce bell sinker.  hopefully the crankbaits cast aswell

I bought 2 PQs and my neighbor bought one the other day when they went on sale.   All 3 reels came from the factory with 4 centrifugal brake pins engaged and 2 disengaged.   We left the centrifugal brakes set that way but have been experimenting with the dial-up magnetic brake when throwing different weight lures.   A Mag setting of 2 for the heavier crank baits and around 6 for the lighter plastic worms and we are throwing these things a country mile with no problem.   Love these reels....quiet and smooth!
