what lure to start making

Featured Replies

I am just getting into making my own hard baits and was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on what to start with.  I made two bodies of crank baits hand carved which I am happy with but have not put them in the water yet as I need to do a little more work.  I am a rookie and would love to have some info from the novice.  I also vivt TU site to check on stuff.  Thank you in advance.

The first thing you need to do is test the crap of the baits you have made.   There is a good chance they won't work like you want them too.   Then you need to figure out why.  If they do work perfectly then you need to make a couple more to see if you can repeat the exact process.

Yes a buddy of mine told me to make some bigger lures to start with as the little ones I made are going to be hard to get right and tune. Hr makes all salt water lures very large from 8-14 inch plugs. I will keep in touch and let you know how I make out.  THis should be a good time.  I like a good , fun challenge.

Start with poppers or propeller baits. Unlike cranks, balancing them is not as critical.  Even if you're a little off, the weight to the trebles in the belly and tail would correct faults. Just a thought. :)
