Punching Set Up Question

Featured Replies

So as of right now I have a *** *** black 7' 11'' Rod and its paired up with a Lews tournament speed spool 7:1:1 with 50lb power pro braid....

Is this a quality punching set up? Is that reel good for punching and flipping or should I be looking else where? Everything is brand new and Im willing to make some exchanges if need be. Im new to punching and flipping so if you have suggestions on what would be best please let me know!!!

Yes. The Lews Tourney reel is a good.entry level reel that i feel out performs it's price. What I like in a reel for heavy cover is a good drag system. Doesn't have to be 21lbs.of drag like Abu Garcia makes. Just needs to be a smooth consistent drag thst goes to the 12-14 range. While in most situations my drag is set no more than 3.5 lbs, when I'm punching heavy mats, I will lock it down.

As for the rod, I'm not super familiar with the 13 rods. They were all the rage that first year they came out. But if it is a Heavy or Extra Heavy then your are where you Wana be.

Sounds like a solid set up. No need to change unless you see a problem. The only thing I might do is put 65 lb braid on it. 50 is fine for a lot of pitching situations but later on this summer when those mats get real thick, thst 65 is gonna be what you want. But 50 is probably fine right now in February and early spring, unless you are in FL.

For Tru flipping and for punching I love the length of thst rod.

I think your set up is just fine and will be pretty nice to fish with its relative light weight. Stick with the 50# PP until you find it inadequate. I also use 65# but there's no sense spending money if you don't have to. Tie a good strong Snell knot and check your line often- you will have few if any breakoffs.

What are the specs on the rod? True punching in the slop requires a very stout rod. The reel is much less critical. Any quality, general use reel should work. A good drag is important but I discourage locking them down. Their whole idea is protect the rod and reel from over load.
