Fiberglass Resin Moulds

Featured Replies

Hello guys

I ve got me some resin in order to experiment in producing a mould for soft bait.... On my first try i've poured the resin with the hardener inside an ashtray coated with an aluminum foil.. MY FIRST TRY WENT LIKE H**L!!!... While i was waiting it to harden a bit, it started fuming and i've almost put the house on fire!!... So.. WHAT WENT WRONG????? I suspect it reacted with the aluminum foil..

Anyways... If you got any help or any links that may be helpfull..Please help  :)

Hi Terry!

Greg, I'll bring tackleunderground to you  8-)

Aluminum doesn't react with polyester resin, actually its an old car audio trick to line the interior with aluminum foil to allow the polyester "cast" to be removed.

When you mention Fumes & excess heat, that means pretty much one thing........ You over-catalyzed the resin. Pay attention to the ratio from your supplier, most are 10:1 & its easy to over catalyze. When that happens you usually get shrinkage & excessive heat, sometimes to the point that it cracks or even burns.

you can actually under-catalyze your molds, just be prepared for a longer cure time.

Hope that helps,

I used to make tons of worms with molds I made. I had molds I made for different sizes, then tied 3 hooks on a line like a K&E or Kelly. I then put the 3 hook tied line in my jig, poured the worm and set the jig over the mold so the hooks would set into the worm. These were awesome worms!  It was a lot of fun.
