Heavy Power Fishing Line

Featured Replies

  • Super User

I have a heavy (some could consider xh) rod with fast action that I plan to use for small swimbaits (4 to 6 inches 1.5 to 2.5 oz), punching lily pads and throwing umbrella rigs. I'm ordering a 6.8 tatula HD (28 ipt) that holds 195 yards of 12# mono.

I'm just not sure what line to use. There is enough give in the rod for braid but I don't want to get a backlash and send my a rig or swimbait for a ride. Also afraid braid would put too much pressure of the a rig wires.

If I go 20 or 25 fluoro, I'd have more give. But I'm not sure how well it would do if I pin a hog under a mat when punching.

What do yall think is a good compromise?

50/65 lb braid to a 20 lb mono leader

50-65# braid should be very manageable. I heard of guys using 90# braid on A rigs (overkill imo) don't worry about damaging the rig with braid. Braid is the way I'd go. If I were to consider an alternative it would probably be a hybrid with 20# breaking strength.

I've hoisted plenty of fish outta hydrilla & Pads with heavy mono, then Yozuri hybrid.. Haven't tried a straight FC ( flipping )& don't care much for Braid, although I understand the love for it, I guess!

Point is, mono will get the job done and has for years.. With all the choices nowadays, you probably are going to have to try them all, then settle on that experience alone..
