Opinion And Advice

Featured Replies

Good evening,

I am writing this post to receive any sort of advice and opinions.

I am a 18 year old male, I have been fishing with an uncle of mine several times growing up in Texas over summer vacation. Ever since I enjoyed fishing, and would like to do it as a hobby now.

Therefore, with that being said. I have a couple of questions which I would love to get opinions and advice.

I am in the process of buying myself a couple of rods and reels, but however do not know what brands are good and cheap. Which rods/reels(combo)  would be recommended for an intermediate fisher, I would prefer spinning spinning reels and also what size would be adequate? I am doing freshwater fishing.

My budget per rod combo would be $50 to $100 per rod

Also, the other question I had is what line would be best for the spinning reel?

I would appreciate any help.

Thank you,

Josue Acosta

Sharks will smell the blood soon enough...

Start out with a Pflueger Trion combo with 8 lb mono. After you are bored with that get a baitcaster.

Welcome aboard, Josue.

Best advice would be to read the articles on

this site. There's a wealth of information for

beginners and pros alike.

Oh, if you are near a Dick's Sporting Goods,

you can pick up some very decent spinning

combos right in your price range.

The Daiwa Samurai combo is very good, comes

spooled with 10 pound mono.

X2. This was what I started with a few years back. Still have the Pflueger in the boat. I want a new combo, old man calls me crazy. Great reels and great rods for the price.

I would look for a medium heavy spinning combo with 10-12lb line. Start with some stick worms and some square bills from strike king. Pfluger makes a president combo that would be a great starter setup.
