whats the difference between a circled split ring and an oval one? is there different applications you might use either one for?

Ovals are generally only used as line ties to attach your clip or line.

All the Oval's I have seen prevent your line/knot from snagging or being impeded/damaged by the split in the ring of the circular split ring.. Of course if you use a clip/snap of some sort it won't matter.

Your line will be protected from the split/sharp edge...

My understanding is that oval rings were designed so you don't carelessly tie off in the split.
