I found this jighead/underspin whatever you want to call it in my tackle in the garage last night.  i've never used it.  weighed in at a little above 3/8 oz.  i was going to put a fluke jr on there, but it would make it too heavy to throw on my rod rated for 5/8oz.  so i opted for the single tail grub yamamoto glow in the dark color (not sure the specific name).  you think this is a close enough copy cat?  anyone else ever fished something somewhat similar with any success?  i fish in some waters near and similar to hartwell so i figured why not?  i'm not really a crowd follower, but i also really enjoy catching fish!!!!!

 

FWIW - The rating is a guideline .... if it's a little over then it should not impact.  The only way to know for sure is to try it.

 

In comparing it to Casey's setup there is one little difference.  The action of the grub.

 

While that will certainly work in certain situations the key to Casey's setup was the very slow rolling of a action-less bait.  The tail on the fluke Jr. is extremely subtle.  Not like the pounding action of a grub tail.

I have been buying a lot of them since I love the concept, I just tend to put a chatterbait on first but I have used them for years in saltwater and simply add a willow blade with swivel on my EWG hook instead of an MJ rig with a senko and it works for flash, but the roadrunners work great but I plan on learning the larger baits on larger underspins. That looks great.

good point felix!  i may look for a smaller profile fluke style bait than i had and give them both a shot!

I don't see why you couldn't put a fluke on that bait.  The only way to find out would be to try it on your rod.

I don't think a few grams is going to make a difference in this case.  If you do go a few grams over the 5/8 oz rating, I won't tattle.

^ maybe i'm a little gun shy because i just had an *** black casting rod break on the 3rd or 4th cast and that was within the specs of the rod. 

i may try out the grub and if i feel like the rod can handle the additional weight, switch up to the fluke style bait.

i really just wanted to try and replicate his setup and see if i could manage some similar results this weekend!  we shall see!

Years ago I fished those with grubs, not the deal imo, too many ate the tails.. Fluke style baits are waay better.. I use those a lot, spinner blade gives all the action you want, fluke body gives it stability and substance.. Again, my opinion based on my own experience on shad filled lakes..
