Will be trying a Fluoro leader this season for the first time.

Will be tying it to Power Pro braid; 10 pound.

 

Have had suggestions to use the Alberto knot, or the Albright knot.

 

And, that both will go thru a rod tip, which sounds good.

 

Question:  do any of you folks "coat" the knot area to make it slip thru easier via having

a bit more of a streamlined shape ?

 

Good idea, but really not required, or just silly ?

 

If good, what do you use ?

clear nailpolish perhaps, or...?

 

Any degradation of the braided line or fluoro due to using ?

 

BTW:  what's your favorite braided line to Fluoro leader knot ?

           how about for the Fluoro leader to lure connection ?

I have a couple of rods with micro guides so I was concerned about knots making it through them. I have tried nail polish and UV Knot Sense from Loon outdoors. Both only made the knots larger and actually harder to pass through the guides. On rods with regular guides, I use a blood knot from braid to fluoro and on my rods with micro guides, I use the Modified Albright. I find the blood knot the easiest of all to tie that's why I use it most. Both of these setups cast just fine.

Not a silly thought but not needed, same goes for using super glue on the knot for added strength.  I catch many 20 pound and up ocean fish, I use 15 or 20# braid with 20 or 30# leader.  I keep things about as simple as can be using an Albright with 7 wraps up and 0 down, very slim knot.  Lure attachment is just as simple, jigs with an ordinary clinch 5 wraps and a loopknot for lures and spoons.  If those knots hold larger jacks and tarpon, they will hold anything else. No reason to improve what's already working perfect.  A perfectly tied knot is essential, as good as that knot is it won't hold a big fish with too tight a drag.

I've never put anything on my leader knot and I've never had any problems.

i wouldn't use a leader with microguides. i've never had anything but trouble that way.

 

Sometimes when I'm using small line i'll roll it very lightly in some super glue, just adds a bit more confidence to me, i dunno if it makes a difference or not

You can tie a hitch at both ends of your knot. This will taper down so they slide through easier.

Bob, when using 10# PP, I'd suggest doing

7-10 wraps UP, then 4-5 back down. I have 

found this to be the strongest. If using thin

line - like 6-8, I up the wraps UP the line.

 

I like to think I tie a very good knot, tight, 

layered properly. So everyone's mileage 

may vary depending on how the knot is

tied, etc.

and you'll find a number of videos and 

animated knot sites that show how to 

tie a standard, modified Albright.

Nothing fancy as I say, this is exactly how I tie it whether I'm fishing salt or fresh.  I don't give the knot much of a thought except to make sure it's right.

 

 

Not that the strength of a knot is over rated, as long as it's strong enough that's good enough for me.  Fish like the ones in my avatar are caught with 15# braid and 20# leader, catch tarpon twice the size on the same set up.  These fish pull to a level that is unbelievable and indescribable to people that have never caught them.  It isn't the knot that lands the fish (it is paramount to tie the knot correctly), it's trusting your drag and expertise.  These fish aren't landed in 60 seconds or less.

 

If one is snapping lines, having knots fail, hooks bending or losing a 6 or 8# bass with 50# braided line, personally I think that person is doing some wrong. 

I found my Albright, which is very small, was still bothersome to me when pitching lightish lures with micro guides, The ones used by Dobyns. I still like the rod so much I bought the identical rod with standard guides, (as the baitmonkey grins)

I use the alberto knot and coat it with mend-it.
