Sideplate On Curado I Won't Close?

Featured Replies

Been trying to close the sideplate for like 30 minutes now.. No matter how hard I push it won't close.

Edit: I just figured out you have to loosen the tension all the way to close it... why is that?

Easy now... Their are two alignment pins on the brake side, ( frame ) ensure you look at alignment then it will go easily..

I tried this and it didn't work, but loosening the spool tension all the way did. I'm a Shimano newbie... are all Shimano's like this?

I never have to back off my cast control to close it. The nipple alignment and spring locking device have a slight resistance on closing, but once your aligned and snap the cover shut it auto locks.. I've heard someone once say they had to back off the cast control to seat the cover, but I'm at a loss on as to why..

Hopefully others can chime in on this..

One thing I noticed is that you should have the reel on its side when the side plate is open, so the open side is facing straight up.  If you have it tilted slightly, or sideways like your holding it when fishing, the brake may hang up, rather the red centrifugal shoe so to speak.  I noticed this with mine when first handling, and could get the plate closed, but then couldn't reel.

If the spool tension is turned too far it pushes the spool outward so when the sideplate is removed spool will be out farther not able to be pushed back in easily. Lessening the spool tension lets the spool/shaft move in more allowing the sideplate to go back on more easily.

The spool shaft is basically squeezed between the sideplate and the tension cap.

I also had a bit of a problem with mine, not bad, just a nuisance. The sideplate has to line up perfectly for mine, no forcing. I don't recall having tension knob issues, but thatis just me. And finally, no, I haven't had this issue with other Shimanos I have. (a lot)

I thought for sure when I couldn't get it back on I broke something, lol. The whole thing wouldn't sit flush

I had the same issue. If the side plate was rotated all the way around it would appear to be in the correct spot but you have to rerotate it back to the original position for it to go back together.

I just bought a Curado today and had the same problem. I know this post is old but it fixed my problem. Thanks.

Ha! nipple alignment. ?

Yep.  Just happened to me with my new K model.  I've got 2 of the silver prior models and I think 3 of the green before that.  It seems like this has happened one or two times before.  Yep...just dial back the cast control.  Of course, it took about 20 minutes of inventing new cuss words before I remembered this.

On any of the new Curados or Chronarchs just pushing the cover on will not do it.  Place the cover on down over the CVS drum until it stops with the nose of the cover slightly pointing down, then just twist the cover up and it will snap in to place.  Don't forget to lock it on.  That said, if will it not snap into place then loosen the cast control cap as described above.

What this guy said. Had the same problem.

Had this problem yesterday on the river in downtown Grand Rapids. Struggled for 10 minutes before searching site which helped me solve the problem in 10 seconds. Yay Bass Resource.

this post is 5 years old, i hope the person is not still struggling to close the side plate.

back off the brake dial, it pushes out the brake drum which prevents the sideplate from closing.
