Backpacking Rods That Are Actually Decent?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know of any spinning rods that break down small enough to back pack with that are actually decent rods? I have an UL ugly stick that would be small enough, but it is so whippy. Are there any "UL" sized rods that still have feel similar to a 6'6" M rod? I have a 2 piece Berkley Lightning 6'6" M that I would like to take on my next backpacking trip, but it is too long once broken down into 2 pieces.

right now cabelas has the fish eagle 50 travel rod 6'6 medium 4 piece on sale from $120 to $55 i would say thats a pretty good deal

I have a 5'6 lightning rod UL that i use for backpacking and general trout fishing

Not sure if they still make em that short anymore

Edit: quick search on google found several 5'6 lightning rods

That Eagle 50 looks nice. BPS has something similar: https://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Micro-Lite-Graphite-Pack-Spinning-Rod/product/10204877/?utm_referrer=direct%2Fnot%20provided&utm_referrer=direct%2Fnot%20provided

Has anybody used either of these? They both have good reviews. I have a BPS local, hopefully they will have one in store I can handle before buying.

nope sorry never tried any of them but both cabelas and BPS have good warranties

The Ardito looks awesome, but a little expensive for a rod that won't get used very often.

I own a bps extreme travel rod and it is fine for what it is used for. There is also the browning travel safari rods for 79 I think that might suit your needs.

Iirc goose52? Has some also and was pleased with them for the price. I would look into those as well if on a budget.

Fenwick methods is like 4 rods in one.

Wow I've been looking for something like this for a long time. Thanks for the suggestion!

Fenwick methods is like 4 rods in one.

They really thought that one out brilliantly. I love their concept on that. The interchangeability really plays to the "cover all bases" mentality that's even more important backpacking.

I ended up getting a Browning Safari 6'6" ML. Seems pretty good just throwing a weight in the yard. Seems sensitive and stiff enough to fish some light T-rigs and bitsy jigs.

That Eagle 50 may be better, but I just can't buy a rod without handling it first.
