Stuck Wide Open

Featured Replies

I have a 2003 bass tracker with a 60hp Tracker(mercury) motor. This past weekend it hung wide open. The throttle control moves as it should. Everything under the hood moves as it should while moving the throttle control. As soon as I crank it, it is idling wide open. Any ideas? I'm hoping something simple. Thanks!

Yikes.   I have no clue, but wish you good luck.  Sounds scary.  I had a trolling motor go to wide open on its own and nearly tossed me from the boat.  Can't imagine how dangerous that would be with 60hp

Take the throttle cable loose and see what happens.

Pull the air box cover off the front of the engine and make sure the butter flies ( if carburated) or single butter fly if throttle body, is fully closing. If they are not "FULLY" closing, then you need to check your linkage and cable to see what's stopping them. If they are fully closing, you need to check the timing advance, it's probably stuck in full advance. The engine will turn over 2,000 rpm just on timing advace and no throttle.

Don't know anything about boat motors, but it sounds like your throttle cable is frayed.

Ended up being a simple fix. A piece to the front of the throttle advance had gotten hung up on a piece of fuel line.

Great
