Need Help On Fishing Strategies

Featured Replies

Hello wide web i have a question for all of you!  I live in the northeast (MA).  I have this pond near me, medium in size, clear water and not heavily fished at all.  It has a crazy large variety of types of shore line.  There is some with lots of fallen trees and beaver dams, some with grass and pads, some with large rocks some just clear shallows and some with sand.  The shores usually range from 2-8 feet in depth and gets deep in the middle.  There are real monsters in here , I know first hand.  What would your strategy be on this pond?  Where would you start in the morning?  what lures would you use?  I am in a kayak so I can cover the entire pond.

id start wherever u launch. If there's a dock or ramp fish it with something like afluke before you even launch. I'd hit the downed trees and beaver dam with a weightless trick worm first (I'm partial to zoom bubblegum ones) and then a Texas rig craw or jig depending on your preference. I'd also use the Texas rig in the grass. The pads I would use a Texas rig and frog when the sun is highest. Over the flats I would use a jerkbait. I'm fond of the perch looking ones since I know the bass love perch on my lake so figure out what the bass eat there. I'd also run a shallow running square bill (I like bluegill patterns) around any creek mouths or other water that flows into the lake and along the downed trees. As for the deeper spotsjerkjerkbaits, deep diving cranks, rattletraps, drop shots, and Texas rigged flukes would be the techniques I would use depending on conditions. And if there are any eels in the water something like a magnum Lol' monster or other giant worm T rigged could be the ticket to a biggun. Also square bill on the flats.

What type of bass; largemouth or smallmouth ot both?

What is the primary prey source for this pond/small lake?

What is the seasonal period now?

You need to answer the above 3 ?

Smallmouth bass locate in different areas than largemouth as a rule.

Lure selection should be based on what the bass prefer to eat in this pond.

Seasonal periods are; winter, pre spawn, spawn, post spawn, summer and fall. In Maine you may be in pre spawn, this is a good seasonal period and bass tend to be actively feeding on larger size baitfish and crawdads.

With the above cover you mentioned, it would be hard for me to put a jig or hollow bodied frog son. I'd throw both in the thickest stuff you can find. I wouldn't throw the frog until the warmer got a bit warmer. Like over 55 degrees or so.
