How do you rig the XPS Swimbait?

Featured Replies

Ive picked up the XPS swimbait plastics and im haveing a heal of a time trying to rig these up...  any help would be very appreciated :).

here is a link to what i purchased...

http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&partNumber=51912&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults

i also bought the gamakatsu weighted worm hooks because i saw steve kennedy use this style and hook up in the bassmasters.  Thanks again for your help :)

guess i don't understand what you mean by rig them up.  I see a line tie on the front, and it's got a treble on the belly.  I would assume you just chunk and wind???

Jason

Rig it just like the picture except embed one of the hook on the treble into the belly. That bait is meant to be fished as slowly as possible while keeping it just under the surface creating a wake

I guess i should of explained that basspro shows them rigged but the plastic themself has no treble nor the line with the lead on the front in them.  I know there is a few ways to rig this.  Im looking for ideas as ive torn the crap outta a few of the plastics now.

Just imagine the plastic in that picture with out any of the hardware.  I also purchased these hooks.... to rig them with.

err the hooks size is 3 and not sure on the weight size pretty close to that picture.  thanks again for the help.  Once again i was looking to see how kennedy did it in the bassmasters.

If i need to rig like basspro has then let me know what i need for the line and lead so i can pick those up.  I can get the trebles just not aware of how i would rig this :/ ...

Thanks so much

I have some of the 4.5"'s and all i had to do was take them out of package, tie it one, tuck treble in belly and cast them..... No way to rig them. Steve kennedy used something else. I think a huddleston trout, and some basstrix baits.

ya your right on what steve kennedy used .. ill see if i cant get a picture for ya all.  But i believe what my buddy bought was the unrigged xps saltwater series swimbaits.  They are def. the same plastic as shown in the above link with out the hardware.  Im sure ill come up with something to rig it but ill see what i can do to get you all a pic.

And i know BPS sells the already rigged set up of this plastic i was just curious on how i should rig what we had purchased.  Thanks again for all the comments and help.

Ok that pic helps alot. Just so you know that first pic is COMPLETLY diferent. not only in rigging but function. Ok to start Kenedy was fishing Hudds ans Basstrix. Basstrix are verry slim and hollow like a tube. They can take a weighted worm hook and still be efective. Your bait is to thick and You probably would have a hard time sticking anything with that hook. I might  slit the belly like a bass assasin and rig a large ewg worm hook in it and rig it like a texas worm complete with the worm weight. You could also hook a jig head through it like it is or cut the head off and use a jig head. To be honest the bait you have is a poor choice because it is not easily, efectivly rigged. If you use a jig head it takes away from any realism that bait had. You could slit the bait from the throat to the belly and remove some plastic where an internal jig head would go, the put a jig head in there and glue it all up. You could dropshot them. Personaly I wouldnt use them. The first bait you showed is a much better choice. It actualy swims ok with a nice little wake but it is verry tempramental and like to roll easily. If you like the style of bait that you have get an optima, if you like the first one pictured get a Baby E. Those are much better choices

The man just gave a bunch of great advice and recommended competitors baits. Listen up!

I think Basspro has discontinued the XPS swimbaits. The saltwater bait is for trolling or something....Think they are more to get $$$ out of unsuspecting customers...... I fished mine once and all it did was rolled no matter how slow you fished it,prollie why its discontinued.. $5 more and you can get a basstrix......there is also a company on ***.com that has some shad and stuff.

That bait is a copy of H&H's Cocohoe Minnow which is highly productive for Speckle Trout and Red Fish; it is designed to be used on a lead head jig with no weed guard. Not exactly what I'd call a swim bait since it is fished very similar to a Jig-N-Craw just a lot faster.

Wow.. thats why these suck :-P... thanks again for all the info.  My buddy picked these up and well let's just say we are both new to the swimbait thing ... he saw the paddle tail and grabbed them... as for BPS well there site sucks when looking up stuff.  When i typed in xps swimbait and did it under the saltwater fishing... that first link is what it gave me.

Anyway ill prob just toss these then.  Thanks again everyone.  Ill prob pick up something that is already pre-rigged.  If not ill grab some basstrix.  How do you rig those up?

thanks

If I were you, I would get myself a huddleston swimbait!  Well worth the money, as they are doing wonders for kennedy!  He tore up our lake on them, and from what I understand, is killing the several other stops so far!  That guy is a really great fisherman!  He really knows what to do...

BPS still sells XPS lures, swim baits includes was In springfield last week and spent to much money on them.

My only problem with going out and spending 20 - 50 dollars on a bait is i dont see to many people here in NC using swimbaits.  I thought it would be fun to try it but it seems to be more of a hassle than anything ;).  I still may go for the hud but i dont know just hard to do when your on a college budget :) lol

thanks everyone
