i have a football jig to drag on the bottom and a round jig to fish around brush, but I also have a jig that the bottom is flat. I know this is commonly used for skipping under docks but is that all it's good for?

Pitch it, let it drop and bottom pop it. Throw a craw on it and there you have it, imitation defensive craw.

Without seeing it, I would assume it is designed as a stand-up version. Some shakey head jigs are designed this way also.  The idea is for the jig to sit on the bottom with the flat side down and the hook in an upward position. This style is also good for dragging along the bottom, especially softer bottoms than the football head.

If the head and hook alignment are similar to a standard bass jig, then it is likely as you guessed, designed for skipping.

It is a good jig around rocks and a soft bottom but I still like my football jigs better! I do fish this kind of a jig after a front and fish it reel slow!!!!!!!!!!!
