Advice on blanks, guides, etc.

Featured Replies

First off, this is my first post here. I now regret registering for this forum, because I have had the itch to build a rod for a long time now, but have been able to push it off by using excuses (time, inexperience, etc.). Thanks to yall, I now am seriously considering building a jig/frog rod.

I am looking for something that will not break the bank, but is relatively light weight and sensitive, but very strong. Strong back bone, F-XF tip. 7-7'4 in length. Any suggestions?

I am also curious about the Batson XTCXNZG with PVD TiCh

Plating with Recessed Zirconium Ring guides. Up till you guys put this idea in my head, I had never heard of them. Any feedback?

Get with the good people at Swampland Tackle, look at the Castaway blanks. They will set you up with everything you need including a bit of encouragement.

It's a very addictive thing, building your own rods.

Once you get a few rods under your belt start talking to Bill about micro guiding, split grips, and other modifications to your builds. After a few builds your rods can exceed anything the factories put out easily.

I've built with the UD style pvd tich w/ zirconium, just not the ALPS.  Good guides, but a little pricey I though.  The ALPS are stout, and way heavier duty than I would ever need.

My advice to any beginner is to use either Alconites or Hardloys by fuji.  They are very good guides, can be found anywhere and are pretty inexpensive.

The Batson rx7 blanks are pretty nice, and for the money they are hard to beat.  The rx 6 are also a killer value.  I currently have a couple MB 843 and 844 Batson blanks... they are a little heavier than a Loomis rating with the same number. (just fyi)

I've never dealt with swampland, but have heard very good things about them.
