Confused Angler

Featured Replies

Hello I recently got the Abu Garcia veritas 2.0 micro guide matched with a lews 7:1:1 ratio and designated it for bass jigs, so far the rod has worked phenomenally and couldn't be any happier but something every angler knows is that bass jigs extremely effective skipping up under docks well, when I go to skip under the dock the jog hits the water and then almost instantly stops unspooling line and maybe skips a couple inches, anyways I was just wondering if it may be the micro guides or what's going on I do make sure the line isn't tangled up and I go in at a very paraell angle anything helps!

Those rods are pretty stiff making them hard to learn how to skip without a much larger learning curve. I would make sure your rod has a good soft tip, your jig isn't too heavy (3/8 oz or less), your brakes aren't too tight, and your delivery is low.

Practice with just enough line on your spool to make a decent cast. This will help with backlashes some.

I cannot skip anything with a baitcaster, I've been fishing them almost exclusively for a decade. Its a hard technique to do imo

Welcome.  I assume you are proficient at skipping jigs and this is just a concern with this new combo.  I doubt whether the micro guides are making the difference. I too would suspect the stiffness of the rod as being the culprit.

Skipping jigs takes a lot of practice... I like Duckett rods, and use a Micro Magic and White Ice to skip jigs. They both have micro guides and I don't have any problem with them. Get on youtube and look up videos on how to skip jigs with bait casters. I found those helpful when I first started learning the technique.

I've found that shorter rods around 6'6" are easier to skip baits with. A 1/4 oz arky jig and a flat sided chunk like a rage chunk will do the trick. I've done it with 3/8 ones before, and if the bait hits the water too soon and stops, you will get a nasty backlash.

Yes, I can skip with other rods and I have also noticed that my Abu heavy medium is much stiffer than my other

I'm guessing the tip is too stiff then if you are already skilled with skipping other casting rods.

Skipping a jig on a baitcaster is like doing wheelies on sport bikes. Lol once you do it and get past that initial point of fear, back lashing(crashing) it becomes second nature.
