Interesting Rig

Featured Replies

I was talking to a guy and he was swearing by an interesting rig I've never seen before. Pretty much he takes a tube and pierces the tip and just pulls the line through. Then he slides on an egg sinker, then ties off with a smaller gap worm hook.  He said wide gap hooks make it twist to much.   Egg sinker gets slid up into the tube with the curve of the hook at the bottom of the tube. Instead of fishing like a tradional tube he would swim it back erradically. He said the real benefit is when you hook up it's harder from them to throw it because the tube and weight go sliding up the line.

Anybody ever fish this rig? I think I'm gonna give it a shot (can't hurt, right?). I don't fish tubes, I don't use egg sinkers, and probably have to pick up hooks too.  Looks like I'm gonna spend 10 bucks tomorrow. Either talk me out of it, or make it the best 10 bucks I've ever spent. I need some bait monkey support here guys. ;D If I do it I'll let you know how it turns out.

That's......different.  (To me anyway.)  Seems like the only trick will be matching the hook with the tube.  You'll need a hook with a long enough shank so that the barb comes out the bottom of the tube.  Also, seems like a bullet sinker would work just fine too as long as it's fat enough to hold its place inside the tube.  See there.  I just saved you $1.59!

Let us know how it goes.

thats is interesting.  sounds like he is trying to get an interior weight but one that will give the benefit of not letting them throw it like they sometimes can with a jighead.

the only thing that i dont really get is that he is swimming it.  for me the biggest benefit of a interior weight is the spiraling fall.  for swimming i dont see why a regular unpegged t-rig wouldnt work just as well.

I was reading in a magazine that swimming a tube is very effective on presured smallies in clear water. Sometimes you gotta change it up to get the fish curious again.

Yeah he said he was using it for smallies, large mouth and even stripers. He also said pretty much anything would hit it.

I got some tubes (actually ended up spending about $25 at Dick's!) and I'm gonna give it a shot tomorrow.

That is a interesting idea I have been fishing tubes with a bullet jig for alot of years but I was concerned with fish throwing the jig this could be a good thing.

Owner makes a cool tube rig with the weight built into it.

I have used them and they work well

Swimming a tube has been very effective for me.

One of my heaviest stringers came from using a 3/4 oz bullet sinker pegged to the front of a BPS magnum flippin tube. I was pitching it into thick weeds and on a fast "get it back for another cast" retrieve I got hammered by a 4 lber. So I started swimming it reel fast with alot of jerks and twitches. That heavy weight kept it down. I caught six bass doing that up to six pounds.

It was incredible.

Here are a couple pics of the rig. Uno e due. I ended up going with a trailer hook cause they were straight shank no bait holder, and also now I have some trailer hooks too. Oh, and no jokes about my small tube.  :)

You know, I would think that you can use that rig, but another twist, you could trade out the regular hook for a treble  hook. This hook would be harder for the fish to throw. In order for it to work that way, you would also have to trade out the egg sinker for a split shot to keep the treble hook "outside the tube."

Who knows, I think that I will try that rig as well.

I think a split shot would defeat the purpose of the whole rig being able to slide away from the fish.

I have a tourny tomorrow, will rig this up and throw it, see what it does.  I am curious myself now.

Ive tried it before.  Its pretty much the same as if you would rig it with a jig head inside of a tube.
