I recently began pouring my own jig heads and need some help with fluxing.  I'm using wheel weights as my lead source because I can get an endless supply for free.  I have a Lee Production 4 Pot and it has clogged around the nipple.  I'm wondering what I need to do to clean it up because I have never used the flux before.  I know wheel weights aren't the best source of lead, but it's what I have to work with.  Any help with clearing that spout, cleaning the pot, and fluxing instructions would be greatly appreciated.

I have (3) Lee IV pots, they all leak, they all work extremely well, and you do not have to clean them, but I flux regularly. Any crap or garbage in the lead will float to the top skim it off with a spoon. Any hooks, wire or metal that fall in the pot will float to the top skim off the top with a spoon. Once you get all the crud off. Take some beeswax, drop 4 or 5 pellets and light the smoke. As it is burning mix the light with a spoon , while it is burning. Wait for the smoke burn to die out, and you will have more crap come to the top. Clean off with a spoon. You should never have your pour spout get stuck it has never happened to me. If it gets stuck, take a fat end of a paper clip, and push it slowly into the bottom hole of the spout, while raising the handle, wiggle it around, but be careful, as lead will be pouring out at the same time. Since you use very hard lead, I would flux definitely after everytime you put in new lead. When fluxing, don't stick you head when you light the smoke. A big flame shoots up (about 6"), I don't want you to get burned and blame me.....If you don't understand this please PM me and I will try to explain it better.........................

I do like cadman told you. I have a bunch of clean lead ingots, I still flux when putting a new one in the pot. I also got a bunch of tire weights, and I am waiting for some warmer weather so I can melt and flux in a different pot outside, and then pour into my ingot molds so it is cleaner lead before putting into my pouring pot.  I use paraffin wax to flux with.

Paraffin works really well also, I just have easier access to bees wax.

i use candle wax to flux...work fine...but im gonna try some bees wax...

When my paraffin runs out I will talk to my brother-in-law who has bees and does honey.  He should be able to get me plenty of bees wax.
