Johnson Outboards

Featured Replies

A fishing buddy is looking at a Triton boat with a Johnson motor.  It's about 5 years old.  He has never owned a Johnson, and prefers Yamahas and Mercs.    Any opinions of the 100+ hp Johnsons?

    Thanks for your iinput!

What year/horsepower is the motor? To my knowledge, Johnson outboards have not been produced for 8-10 years (2007ish) and I believe they stopped producing the larger motors a coue years before that.

In general evinrude/Johnson motors are of good quality. They do have a few year classes and models with some "quirks," but are generally a good motor IMO.

Edit: I did some checking and 2007 is right on the last year of Johnsons, but it looks like that was the only year they didn't make the larger motors, so 100+ Johnsons would be from 2006 and later.

Carbureted Johnsons are bulletproof.  They had some problems during the FITCH era.  For a while the re-labeled4 stoke Suzuki motors as 4 stroke Johnsons.

If it's only five years old, it's probably the four stroke.

Thanks for your research-  when you say 2006 and later, do you mean before 2006?

Correct, before 2006. Not familiar with a Johnson outboard 4 stroke from after that as someone mentions above. I do know I've seen Evinrudes and Johnsons with he opposite name on the cowling, so that would be a possibility also if it actually has Johnson in it and is 5 years old.

Thanks again on behalf of my fishing buddy to all my fellow members for your wisdom and time.

             Tight lines!

All I can say is my Cajun Demon has a Johnson 70 on it from 1989 and it is a 2 stroke and has perfect compression. Motor is a beast!!! Love my JM!!!!

Gee man, I´ve had this 6.5 Johnson for maybe 20 years and so far the only thing I´ve had to do was to replace a gas pump and have it serviced a couple of times.
