The only time I've done it was on a 40hp. Took the cowl off the linkage was hooked right up to the shifting mechanism. Basically had all-thread there with nuts that could adjust it one way or the other. No clue if that is what yours looks like or not.

When you say not going in do you mean there's binding at the controls? Does the shifter move but the lu doesn't actually engage forward gear?

yes the shfter moves

Ok. I just looked back on the other topics you had about it. Sorry to hear about your dad.

It sounds like it goes in reverse in the water and in forward only when not under a load?

If you've eliminated the hub It could be cable adjustment I guess but since you had said it sounded like it spun something I'd think its in the lower unit. Has anything been done with the lower unit or controls, etc or did it just happen? Have you drained or checked the fluid in the lower unit? Be looking for excessive metal shavings.

no havent checked it but i will, i really appreciate all the help like i said in recent posts my dad was a boat mechanic for 40 years and would always tell me what to do.  Its almost as if its not goin in gear all the way.

Adjust your linkage. Should be fairly simple with some investigation of the components. It will make a grinding spinning noise if it's sitting right at the edge of a gear. Picture a manual transmission on a truck/car.

Take the cowl off the motor, shift into forward and reverse to find the linkage on the motor. Once you have found it, identify the "stopper". There should be an adjustment nut of some sort there. Shift the motor into forward gear ON THE MOTOR, NOT WITH THE CONTROL ONE BY THE WHEEL and tighten the "stopper" up to that point. Then shift the motor into reverse, again, use the one on the motor, not the control shifter. Make sure it goes all the way.

Put the cowl back on, go fish and remember your dad.

Hope this helps.
