Reel Ratio Or Ipt??

Featured Replies

What is yall personal preference reel ratio for top water toads or buzz frogs like ribbit frogs, horny toads, rage toads etc...

I like a high gear ratio to get them out of the thick stuff fastly. But imho a few inches difference in IPT won't make a huge difference unless your deep crankong then it will wear you out.

The highest ipt reel you own for any top water presentation, will definitely be a plus to get a fish out of the slop.

When throwing in heavy pads, grass etc your chances of landing that fish increase when you get it's head up and to the boat as quick as you can.

For me a high speed retrieve is a must.

Higher speed is better for the reasons mentioned above as long as you can make yourself work the bait slower as needed.  I know many people who when they get a fast reel they work the baits way to quickly and have a tough time slowing down.

Ipt - is the important number when you're concerned about the speed of your lure during a particular presentation.

Ratio is important when you are deciding how much physical work you want to do to accomplish that speed.
